Irena Sendler a 98 year old German lady recently died and is remembered for her selfless heroic actions during WWII. knowing the Nazi’s plan for the Jews Irena got permission to work as a Plumbing and Sewer specialist in the Warsaw Ghetto. Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried and carried a burlap sack in the back of her truck for the larger kids. She had a dog in the truck bed trained to silence the children’s voices by barking when the Nazis let her through the gates of the Ghetto. Irena managed to save 2500 children before she was caught. The Nazi’s broke her legs, arms, and beat her severely. Irena kept a record of the kids names in a glass jar buried under a tree in her back yard and after the war tried to locate the surviving parents reuniting them. Those children whose parents had been executed by gas Irena helped get placed into foster families and adopted.
Last year Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize. She was not selected in a year when Al Gore was awarded the prize for his Slide Show on Global Warming. The following cartoon revisits a powerful message 63 years old when after the second world war in Europe ended six million Jews, 20 million Russians, 10 million Christians and 1,900 Catholic priests were murdered, massacred, raped, burned, starved and humiliated.
