Government Run Health Care? Prove it!

Wow. Talk about having one’s facts wrong.

FASLE: The Department of Energy was created in 1977 to lessen our dependence on foreign oil. It has ballooned to 16,000 employees with a budget of $24 billion a year and we import more oil than ever before. You had 32 years to get it right and it is an abysmal failure.

TRUE: The department of energy was NOT created to reduce our dependency on foreign oil. It was created to consolidate responsibiilties for nuclear weapons development, domestic energy production, nuclear waste management, etc.

FALSE: The U.S. Post Service was established in 1775 You have had 234 years to get it right and it is broke.

TRUE: The USPS is not “broke”. Consider the following: 1) the USPS has not received any taxpayer dollars in over 25 years; 2) if the price of stamps kept pace with inflaction, a first class letter would cost well over $1 dollar. Today, it only costs only $0.44. 3) The USPS, like many enterprises, has experienced a sharp reduction in volume due to the economic crisis. To respond, the USPS has announced that it will close low volume offices to reduce costs. In addition, it is also considering a rate hike. 4) Their is no risk the USPS will close, or that it will require any public funds to maintain operations.

TRUE: Social Security is not “broke”. Even with no changes, Social Security will be able to meet its obligations for the next 40 years. Even after that point, Social Security will not be broke, but may have to reduce payouts and/or raise FICA. By the way, 40% of all Americans over the age of 65 would live in poverty were it not for social security.

FALSE: Fannie Mae was established in 1938. You have had 71 years to get it right and it is broke. Freddie Mac was established in 1970. You have had 39 years to get it right and it is broke.

TRUE: Fannie and Freddie are NOT government agencies. In addition, their respective charters state that neither receive ANY direct government funding or backing and that their securities carry NO government guarantee of being repaid. Their recent bailout by the government was not due to governent ownership any more than the government’s bailout of the banks was.

As for things the government has “gotten right”, consider that our government (which according to the author, can’t get anything right) has developed and continues to field the most advanced and capable military in the world and operates the most advanced space program in the world.
